The E•P•I•C Season Coaching System™ — Building Lifelong Athletes
Working with a Coach like me…
I enjoy working with riders who want to be active, and have a goal event or race in mind. You can imagine performing well, but need help planning workouts to get there. You realize it’s going to take a few months of consistent riding to develop your fitness. And …
You want to follow a holistic coaching system to get enduring results.
If that describes you, then let’s work together! Because I know you’re going to pay attention to the workouts I’ll be giving you. I can ensure the goals you set will fit your lifestyle needs.
E • Examine and Envision: The coaching system begins here …
We begin with a start-up discussion Examining where you’ve been as an athlete, not just a cyclist. Then we discuss where you are today in your athletic journey. And finally we Envision the goals and objectives to work on this season.
P • Plan your season
After envisioning your goals, I develop your Annual Training Plan (ATP). As your coach I’m going to eliminate your planning stress. Your personalized ATP can accommodate any planned work and family travel. You’ll follow a phased block development approach where you develop your key fitness requirements.
I use the coaching tools inside TrainingPeaks (TP) to give you an overview of the build-up to your goal event.
I • Implement your training
Month-by-month or week-by-week, depending on the coaching program you’re enrolled in, I set the daily workouts in your athlete’s TP account. Every workout has a purpose driven by the current training phase of your ATP.
Your workouts will be solo rides with some options for group riding when it makes sense. So, when you need it, you can use the friendship of club rides to stay motivated. The balance of solo and group rides will be discussed in the Envision stage.
If you’ve got a compatible bike computer, you will even be able to download the workouts. Your bike computer will act like an in-ride coach, directing you through all the prescribed work.
It’s important to do the work I’ve set out for you. This means trying to stick with the time, distance and intensity requirements detailed in each workout. Many of these elements have been tailored specifically for you and the events or races you’re targeting this season.
Your key to ultimate success will be quality over quantity. That means being regular with your training. It isn’t just one workout, but it’s what you do consistently over a period of time.
But sometimes life will get in your way. You’ll need to cut some workouts short, or even miss them. Make appropriate post-workout comments in your TP account, so I’ll understand what’s happened. Usually you just accept the missed workout and move on. With your comments, I’ll step in to make adjustments going forward.
When you’ve completed a workout, you’ll need to upload the training data to TP so I can have a look. Many bike computers now do this semi-automatically – if not completely automatically. So your completed workouts will always be visible to me.
C • Check-in and Communication
Without check-in and communication with me – your personal coach – your plan will become obsolete. You see, your plan needs to adapt and improve as you improve.
With your training results stored in TP, I can oversee your progress. You’ll leave workout comments too, especially when a workout went fantastic or was an utter failure. I’ll make adjustments to your ongoing plan based on my analysis of your workout results and your comments.
And when life starts getting in the way? … Something like an unplanned business trip? You’ll keep me in the loop early, by posting your non-cycling plans in TP as soon as they come up. I’ll help fit your training around and into those days.
We stay in touch through emails and calls, based on the frequency in the coaching program you’ve selected. If you need to make an unexpected change, send me a short text message. I’ll often be able to accommodate you immediately or in our next scheduled check-in. When you need help with recovery techniques, nutritional ideas or mental training, I’ll be there to answer your questions.
You’ll also be a member of my Virtual Group Ride newsletter. I’ll share helpful articles. So you can become more knowledgeable about your whole fitness journey too.
… And Achieve your EPIC Season!
The heart and soul of the E•P•I•C Season Coaching System™ is our one-on-one interaction to help you think through all your training goals, problems and solutions. By staying in touch with me you will discover your self-confidence to be the rider you want to be.
I’m not going to just throw workouts in a schedule for you. If it’s only workouts you want, then there are many books and magazine articles for you. You’ll get 80% of your results from using the right one. But if you want 100% results then hire me for the level of ongoing coaching to build towards your goals.
Properly implemented, the E•P•I•C Season Coaching System™ will give you a remarkable season of cycling. You’ll experience your evolving full fitness potential. You’ll have insight to what still needs work. When you Examine and Envision your next season, you’ll have solid ideas to work on.
Over time, you’ll become good enough at running your own training plans, with less and less input from me. And that’s okay. Because I’ll have transformed you into a healthy, self-driven athlete for life. Mission accomplished! Hopefully that means we’ve become life-long friends too. You’ll feel free asking me for further advice throughout your journey.
Your Equipment Requirements
I assume you’ve got the basic equipment like a bike, cycling kit, helmet and shoes.
Because I’m using TrainingPeaks to deliver your workouts, you need a compatible bike computer to upload your completed rides. Click here for the list of currently compatible devices you can use.
All athletes should at least have heart rate monitors and cadence sensors. Epic Program Riders should seriously consider a power meter. For Podium Program Racers, a power meter is mandatory.
“I really appreciated Kevin’s contributions to helping me win the 2017 Alberta Provincial Master D titles in both the Time Trial and Road Race. And I had respectable showings in Nationals, World Masters and World Seniors this season too. Thanks for everything!”
